Teletherapy for Kids & Their Parents

What is Teletherapy/Virtual therapy?

Teletherapy is a form of therapy service provided via secure internet technology.  Sessions are similar to how you would FaceTime or Skype- but through a HIPAA compliant platform to make sure your information stays safe.  The great thing is most kids and parents are already very comfortable with this type of platform!  Teletherapy services may be experienced somewhat differently than face-to-face treatment sessions.

As with most technology, there are benefits and limitations to this kind of service.

➤ Why use Teletherapy?

Teletherapy is an option for those they are unable to attend their normal in-person sessions.  Research shows that teletherapy has high client satisfaction and can produce results as effectively as in-person sessions.  Your therapists provide the same high-quality care as if you were seeing them in the office.

➤ How is it done?

All you need is access to a computer, tablet, compatible phone, a strong internet connection and a private area for your child or you to meet with the therapist. Beyond that, some toys or coloring materials might be needed. Depending on your child’s age, your therapist will provide parents with a list of common household items and instructions in order to maximize time together. Sometimes we will not have an activity that requires materials, but your therapist will always give you a heads up regardless.

➤ What does a child need to be successful in tele-play-therapy?

Children only need a space by themselves, with toys that would ideally mimic a play therapy room, but don’t worry!  Your therapist will help you determine exactly what items are needed.  Virtual sessions are just like in person, just with a screen between us.

➤ Tips to prepare for your teletherapy session

  • Choose a quiet, private setting
  • Make sure that your computer, tablet, or phone has a working camera and reliable internet connection
  • Test your camera and audio before your session begins; ensure that both your camera and microphone are “on”
  • Be ‘present’ for your session as if you were in your therapist’s office
  • Minimize any distractions from other family members

➤ Teletherapy for Parents

Virtual sessions allow the therapist to see interactions in the home with the parent and child. This provides the therapist with unique information about the family dynamics in the home environment. Even better, many of our families opt to have us ‘in their ear;’ walking them through every step of their parenting goals. If you have ever wished your therapist could see exactly what you are talking about, Teletherapy is what you are looking for. By letting us into your home, we can help you navigate each step of parenting; whether it is managing homework, sibling dynamics, preparing for naptime, or so much more.

➤ Tele-play-therapy for Children

While in-person play therapy is preferred by many families, teletherapy can also be a great option for children who have busy schedules, do not have access to a near-by therapist, or may have difficulties in various environments.  Virtual sessions can even be used during a transition into physical play therapy for children who do not feel safe or comfortable in the therapy offices.  Just like in office play therapy, sessions are 100% customized to your child- and can include anything from puppets, to drawings, to sensory play and so much more.

➤ Teletherapy for Preteens

This is likely the simplest adjustment to make because preteens tend to be very tech savvy.  For many preteens, they may actually prefer to be virtual!  Imagine how much easier it could be to convince your preteen to go to therapy, if they could sit in their own bed while talking with their therapist.
