Can ADHD Be Outgrown

One of the most common questions parents ask is whether their children will continue to struggle with the challenges of ADHD symptoms well into adulthood or if they will outgrow the condition. Research has shown that although outgrowing ADHD is not common, the presentation and struggles found in adulthood vastly differ from those experienced in childhood.

ADHD symptoms may become less apparent and present in much more subtle ways than the common difficulties of hyperactivity and fidgetiness often seen in childhood ADHD. Additionally, treating ADHD in childhood provides various coping tools and learned strategies to allow children to handle their ADHD symptoms more effectively as demands and responsibilities increase. The simple knowledge and understanding of the condition and an accessible support network provide relief for many challenges. All of these can lead to much less disruptive and better managed ADHD symptoms, which is often mistaken for “outgrowing” the condition.

Additionally, another element is the gap between the biological age and the social-emotional age of children. During Dandelion parenting sessions, we discuss the difference in these ages and explore their meaning since the wider the gap between these two ages, the more challenging the behaviors and symptoms we see. The goal of therapy is to shorten this gap so that children act and function closer to their biological age the majority of the time.
