Speech Therapy or Dandelion Kidz Club?

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy focuses on articulation, language abilities, language fluency, feeding and swallowing and social pragmatics. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) emphasize language flexibility, communication, language processing abilities, and conversations. SLPs help children understand the basics of communication skills in social settings with peers. For example, they might concentrate on turn-taking, remaining on topic and not interrupting others. Speech therapists are able to diagnose communication disorders and other language deficits and are definitely an asset for those who struggle with social skills.

Dandelion Kidz Club

Our year-round program focuses on building social skills in a child’s natural environment of PLAY!! We hone in on both the social and emotional factors that are involved in building relationships with peers. Our goal is to build off of pre-existing skills or to redirect skills that are impacting them from creating and maintaining healthy relationships. We do not just teach children skills, but our groups increase their ability to effectively apply skills in real-life situations. Because our groups are year-round with a rolling concept, our students learn how to continuously meet new people and say goodbye to people when they leave or graduate our program. Once again, the goal is to mimic real life. We believe that social skills groups are enriched by being student-led versus curriculum-based. All of our clinicians are heavy trained in social skills models, however, we implement these techniques naturally within our groups. We are aware that all kiddos are different and require distinctive approaches and because of that we have 3 levels to better meet our clients’ individual needs.

We value:

  1. Building relationships
  2. Teaching within a real-life setting
  3. Meeting kiddos where they are at socially
  4. Being student-led vs curriculum-based
  5. Creating meaning and building understanding within social dynamics

Why choose DKC? Your kiddo:

  1. is struggling to initiate and maintain relationships due to not understanding social dynamics
  2. has completed social skills classes and groups but continues to struggle
  3. has a diagnosis of ADHD or ASD (*they do not need a diagnosis to participate in our group)
  4. is struggling beyond the basics of social skills, i.e.: taking turns, initiating greetings, remaining on topic
  5. struggling with the emotional portion of how others feel
  6. managing how they feel and how to express their feelings to others appropriately
  7. feeling like they are the only one to struggle with social difficulties

If you are still debating about what is best for your kiddos please give us a call. We would love to talk to you more about it and see if you would be a good fit for our group!
