What is Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT)?
Synergetic Play Therapy, or SPT, is a researched-informed model of play therapy developed by Lisa Dion. It combines the therapeutic powers of play with principles from nervous system regulation, interpersonal neurobiology, physics, attachment theory, mindfulness and therapist authenticity.
SPT emphasizes understanding the neurological processes that lead to dysregulation, as well as the vital role others play in co-regulation and authentic connection. These relationships help integrate experiences and rewire brain connections to support regulation of both the body and mind.
SPT expands on the traditional therapeutic powers of play by focusing on the relationship between therapist and child. Through this connection, the child receives support in changing their perception of challenges in their life and in embracing their authentic self.
Beyond being a play therapy model, SPT is also a way of being in a relationship, with oneself and with others. It is a paradigm that can be applied to all aspects of life.
➤ What are the key goals of SPT?
Understanding the Symptoms of the Nervous System and ‘Its States’:
SPT explores the various states of the nervous system and their impact on how individuals present. Through the lens of neuroscience, symptoms and behaviors are viewed as key pieces of information about how a person is responding to internal and external stimuli. This expanded understanding helps individuals adapt their future responses more effectively.
Support Child to Connect and Attune to Themselves:
SPT emphasizes the importance of children becoming aware of their internal experiences. By creating a neuroception of safety in the playroom, therapists support children in moving toward, rather than avoiding, uncomfortable memories and emotions. This model of play helps children appreciate and connect to their authentic selves. In SPT, attachment to oneself is considered the cornerstone of healing.
Regulate the Nervous System:
Through the power of relationship, attunement and co-regulation, therapists help children re-pattern their nervous system responses, shifting from a state of dysregulation to balance, regulation and self-awareness. Mindfulness techniques as well as co-regulation strategies are used to build new skills for emotional regulation.
Improve Relationships and Attachment:
SPT enhances the development of secure attachment through strong therapeutic relationships and the exploration of attachment experiences within play.
Facilitate Emotional Integration:
SPT helps children process and integrate past experiences, improving their resilience and emotional stability. By addressing neurological and emotional patterns, symptoms such as aggression, isolation and physical symptoms decrease leading to an overall improved well-being.
➤ What is the role of the therapist?
In SPT, the therapist is considered the most important toy in the playroom. Their presence is central to the child’s healing and connection to self. With a deep understanding of neuroscience, attunement, and the therapeutic powers of play, the therapist acts as an external regulator: supporting the child in approaching difficult emotions and expanding their window of tolerance.
A key element of the therapist’s role is being authentic and present while creating a genuine, attuned connection with the child. This relationship forms the foundation for meaningful, effective change.
Child EMDR therapists often work with caregivers to build safety, trust, and emotional regulation before trauma processing begins.
