ODD/DMDD Counseling for ADHD Children
Empowering Your Child to Thrive Without Defiance
There’s anger, and then there is your child. The out-of-control chaos, the rage, the spiteful and revenge-seeking behavior. There is persistent arguing, hitting, kicking, spitting, and at times, it feels downright vindictive. You’ve tried everything, and nothing works. Your parents say it’s your fault, and you’re pretty sure all the neighbors are judging you. Absolutely nothing makes a difference and you’re ready to call it quits.
Parenting a child with ODD/DMDD feels exactly this. But, it doesn’t have to be!
➤ What is ODD?
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a behavioral diagnosis characterized by a pattern of defiant, hostile, and disobedient behavior toward authority figures, such as parents or teachers. Children with ODD often display persistent anger, argumentative behavior, and vindictiveness.
➤ Key Symptoms of ODD:
- Frequent Temper Tantrums or Anger Outbursts: Displays excessive anger or emotional outbursts, often disproportionate to the situation.
- Arguing with Adults: Regularly engages in arguments with parents, teachers, or other authority figures, challenging their requests.
- Defiance and Non-Compliance: Actively refuses to follow rules or comply with instructions, even for routine tasks.
- Deliberately Annoying Others: Intentionally provokes or upsets others, such as siblings or peers, by ignoring boundaries or teasing.
- Blaming Others for Mistakes: Avoids taking responsibility by blaming others for their own errors or misbehavior.
- Irritability and Resentfulness: Shows persistent irritability, anger, or resentment, often appearing easily annoyed.
- Vindictive Behavior: Acts spitefully or seeks revenge, holding grudges or retaliating for perceived wrongs.
- Difficulty Maintaining Relationships: Struggles with peer, family, or teacher relationships due to frequent conflicts.
➤ What is DMDD?
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a behavioral diagnosis characterized by chronic irritability and severe and frequent temper outbursts.
➤ Key Symptoms of DMDD:
- Chronic Irritability: A persistently irritable or angry mood most of the day, nearly every day, noticeable in interactions with parents, teachers, or peers.
- Severe Temper Outbursts: Verbal (e.g., yelling) or behavioral (e.g., throwing objects, physical aggression) outbursts that occur three or more times per week and are disproportionate to the situation.
- Outbursts Inconsistent with Age: Emotional reactions are significantly more intense than expected for the child’s developmental level (e.g., a 10-year-old reacting like a toddler).
- Symptoms Across Settings: These behaviors occur in at least two environments, such as home and school.

Due to our intensive parenting support process, in addition to individual weekly child sessions, weekly parenting sessions are expected at the beginning of therapy. The duration of these sessions depends on the level of distress in the family and the level of parenting needs. With meeting weekly, many families meet their goals in 6-8 months!
➤ What if your child’s ODD/DMDD isn’t ODD/DMDD at all?
Here’s what many parents don’t know: In ADHD children, what looks like ODD or DMDD is often a reflection of unmet ADHD needs- not a separate disorder. Understanding whether your child is struggling or defying, or whether they’re simply overwhelmed and dysregulated, makes all the difference.
Yes, there is a clear difference between ODD/DMDD and ADHD, but it is not always well-understood in the broader medical community. Too often, families are sent down the path of exhaustion and discouragement, chasing the wrong diagnosis and getting little support in return.
We’re here to change that!
Our therapists are trained to recognize the important distinctions between ADHD, ODD, and DMDD, and to support families who are often left feeling confused, blamed and exhausted. You’re not alone and you don’t have to stay stuck in survival mode. Schedule an appointment today and let us help you move from chaos to clarity. We’ll work with your family to uncover what’s really going on beneath the surface, and empower your child to thrive.
