Is teletherapy right for you?

At Dandelion, we offer teletherapy services in lieu of in person sessions. We have added this option to reach those families that are not local to Charlotte though are seeking our support. If you are trying to decide if teletherapy services are an option for your family, below is a list of advantages and disadvantages for teletherapy.

       Advantages

      Disadvantages

  • Schedule flexibility
  • Convenient
  • Saves commuting time
  • It may be more comfortable in a familiar setting
  • The therapist can see how your child behaves in the home environment
  • Real time support for parenting during family dynamics
  • Insurance might not cover it, it’s important to check with your insurance provider
  • Concerns about confidentiality and privacy
  • Unreliable technology
  • The environment around your child may be distracting
  • Can be challenging for more active clients

There is often added stress when thinking about trying to make your appointment time when fighting Charlotte traffic. Teletherapy is convenient and allows for scheduling flexibility and no commuting, which can provide some needed stress relief! By utilizing these services at home, your child may feel more comfortable because it is a familiar environment. Your therapist might even see all the behaviors that you have been telling them about, which sometimes can be difficult in a controlled environment (i.e., the therapy office). The home is your child’s natural environment and working through behaviors in that environment can often be very beneficial for kiddos and parents.

However, it is important to keep in mind that sessions need to remain confidential and private in your home. Your child may not feel safe to communicate with their therapist if they feel they will be overheard or observed by parents or siblings. To help with privacy, you can proactively choose a private room or location where the session can be held to remain confidential.

These are some points to keep in mind when thinking about transitioning to teletherapy. It is best to choose the service format (i.e. traditional or teletherapy) based on those that will best suit the needs of your family.
