The benefits of pets for kids with Aspergers

There are so many benefits associated with owning a pet. The bond between owner and pet can impact both mental and physical health! Physically, they can help to decrease blood pressure, increase opportunities for exercise, and decrease cholesterol levels. Mentally, they can decrease feelings of loneliness, give individuals companionship, and they increase the opportunities for socialization!

While pets are great for the general population, they can be even more helpful for children with Aspergers! Below are some of the awesome benefits that animals can bring to kids with Aspergers:

  • Sensory Support

Sensory processing difficulties are common in kids with Aspergers. Pets are a great way to help a child regulate their sensory needs when in a state of high anxiety. Petting the animals can be a source of comfort and provide some relief for when they start to feel overwhelmed by their sensory input.

  • Social Support

Children who are struggling in social settings can get support from having a pet. They are great social ice breakers! Animals will provide more opportunities to be social and kids with Aspergers might be more willing to interact with others if an animal present. Pets tend to attract people to initiate a social interaction, which gives the child plenty of chances to practice social engagement. This also teaches children to be compassionate by taking care of the pet every day.

  • New Opportunities

Children with Aspergers are often very routine oriented. Having a pet allows flexibility in their routine driven lives. Pets are also fantastic way to persuade children to trying something new.

  • Increased Communication

Children struggling with communication can integrate social skills into their daily lives by owning a pet. This allows them to discuss a topic that others may be interested in. This can even increase confidence as others show interest in them!

  • Safety

Animals promote a source of safety for kids. They can provide constant comfort by sleeping with them, or just being around them daily. This comfort helps the child to feel more confident because pets don’t judge! Pets will love the child unconditionally, which is another sense of security for them to be themselves.

  • Reduced Stress

Animals are amazing creatures. Similar to humans, they are sensitive to emotions and feelings. They can be useful in preventing meltdowns or helping a child to initiate a state of calm. In addition, pets can interrupt these behaviors by asking for attention (petting), or by making noise (barking/meowing) or distracting them in essential moments.

As stated, there are many benefits to owning a pet that can be life-changing for children with Aspergers! It is important that parents consider their child’s sensitivities and the family dynamics before getting a pet.
